Replacement of existing control panels at Kilkeel WWTW

by fmenvironmental / Tuesday, 28 March 2023 / Published in Stormwater Management

FM Environmental working with Lowry Building & Civil Engineering replaced and upgraded the existing control panels and field cabling at NI Water’s Kilkeel Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW). Kilkeel WwTW has a PE equivalent of 16,000 with a FFT of 144 l/sec and is an aeration-based treatment works utilising 2 No Oxidation Ditches and 2 No. large FST’s as its main treatment components.

While it was a challenging project in light of the fact that the site treatment works had to remain operational and effluent compliance was a key priority. The FME site team working closely with the client NI Water and Pronto Engineering Group and successfully planned a controlled phased replacement and upgrade to ensure the project was safely carried out and to a high standard of workmanship without reducing the effluent standard.

This replacement and upgrade represents a major investment in the Wastewater Treatment process at Kilkeel WWTW and will allow NI Water to efficiently monitor, control and treat the wastewater on site for many years to come.

The existing multiple control panels and PLC’s had come to the end of their serviceable life and the new developed design, rationalised the requirements on site reducing the existing 3 large control panels to 2 No. back to back MCC units with 43 various starter sections in the main building which was then designed, built and tested to the latest NIW MEICAT Specification. In total approximately 21km of cabling was installed throughout the site.

OUTLINE SCOPE OF WORKS

1. Upgrade and replace of the three existing large control panels with a new Profibus based MCC c/w IPC HMI and SCADA package and upgrade Telemetry on site.
2. Replacement and upgrade of site wide instruments and actuators to Profibus compatible units.
3. Replacement and installations of various new flowmeters throughout the treatment process.
4.    Integrate various small proprietary control panels to the new MCC via a new Profibus network.
5. Develop and install a new PLC and Profibus network.
6.   Develop and implement a Functional Design Specification to resolve legacy issues on site.
7.   Re-design and upgrade the lighting within the MCC room.
8.   Design and install a ventilation system within the MCC room to remove excess heat.

The new MCC has been designed to provide centralised control using an IPC HMI SCADA based unit and PLC over a new Profibus network system to increase visibility, efficiency, reliable control and monitoring of the various plant and instruments through the treatment works.
